Dubrovnik

A town in southern Dalmatia

Dubrovnik is an old city on the Adriatic coast in the extreme south of Croatia. It is one of the most prominent tourist centers of the Mediterranean, a seaport and the center of Dubrovnik-Neretva County. The city of Dubrovnik (Latin: Ragusa) was built on a maritime trade. In the Middle Ages, it became one city-state on the Adriatic that competed with Venice. Supported by its wealth and skilful diplomacy, the city achieved an extraordinary level of development during the 15th and 16th centuries. Dubrovnik was one of the centers of development of the Croatian language and literature, home to many prominent poets, playwrights, painters, mathematicians, physicists and other scientists.
